My name is 김지숙, Kim Ji Sook. I go by Ji.
I was born and raised on the East Coast of America, mainly in DC, Maryland, New York, and Virginia. I grew up among family who made their living by fixing cars, cutting hair, wiring lighting, running liquor shops, wrapping deli meat, delivering mail. I did the same.
Years later, I returned to college as an older adult. I graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in English Literature and a minor in Creative Writing. I’m currently based in DC and Virginia.
My writing asks questions about America. It talks about immigrant experiences. It contemplates slice-of-life moments. It looks into family relationships with a critical eye and, I hope, a compassionate heart.
If you read with genres, my writing goes from speculative to sci-fi to magical realism to history to our current every day. Perhaps, you’ll hop a ride on a flying whale, or you’ll sit across an empty seat with two cups of barley tea.
